A major Belgian financial institution's Operational and Permanent Control reporting factory needs a medior Data Engineer to collect, clean and structure control and reporting data that supports risk and compliance decisions. The role focuses on hands-on data work in a complex environment, using strong SQL and SAS experience alongside advanced Excel and VBA to deliver user-friendly data pooling and sampling solutions.
The mission
The team operates inside an OPC Control and Reporting Factory responsible for delivering reconciliations, control reports and management dashboards used by control managers and business units. Your work will feed recurring control cycles and ad-hoc investigations, ensuring datasets are auditable and compliant with governance rules. The technical landscape includes relational databases, SAS jobs for processing, Excel/VBA for end-user tooling and growing interest in visualisation platforms.
On a day-to-day basis you will gather, link and validate data across multiple source systems, build sampling and pooling processes for control purposes, and prepare datasets that stakeholder teams can use directly. You will work closely with control owners, data analysts and IT contributors, owning data quality checks and communicating findings that drive remediation plans. The position requires autonomous delivery while aligning to factory standards and schedules.
Your responsibilities
- Design and deliver validated datasets and ETL processes that reduce manual reconciliation effort and improve control coverage
- Analyse datasets to identify trends, anomalies and root causes, then present clear, evidence-based recommendations to control owners
- Implement data pooling and sampling techniques that enable self-service controls for business users
- Maintain and improve SAS jobs, SQL queries and Excel/VBA tools to ensure repeatability and auditability of reports
- Liaise with stakeholders to translate control requirements into technical specifications and agreed remediation actions
- Ensure data integrity and compliance with governance and privacy expectations during all phases of data handling
Your profile
Essential skills
- Minimum 5 years' experience in data analytics or engineering, delivering business-critical datasets
- Strong hands-on experience with SQL for data manipulation and query optimisation
- Proven working knowledge of SAS for data processing and reporting
- Demonstrable experience in data pooling and sampling techniques and in setting up data solutions in complex environment
- Advanced Excel skills, including VBA for automation and end-user tooling
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, able to distil complex analyses into concise messages
Preferred skills
- Experience with Power BI or Tableau for dashboarding and distribution of control outputs
- Familiarity with data governance concepts and GDPR implications in a control environment
- Prior experience in banking or financial services is an advantage
