A major Belgian public-sector organisation is modernising its IT foundations through a Digital Transformation Office programme, creating a small specialist team to optimise Linux servers, databases and centralized logging. This IT System Engineer Linux / DBA role focuses on hands-on Linux administration, database (Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB) operations and centralized logging solutions, plus integration with public cloud platforms such as Azure, Oracle Cloud and AWS.
The mission
The project delivers a detailed inventory and optimisation roadmap for Linux hosts and their associated databases. You will map current environments, measure resource usage and identify operational inefficiencies so the organisation can reduce costs for CPU, memory and storage while improving performance and resilience. The assignment supports a team intake of three engineers working with the Digital Transformation Office and the CTO office to stabilise foundations and standardise operations.
Day to day you will perform environment discovery, define an operational optimisation plan and help implement improvements: automated patching, real-time monitoring, performance tuning and improved backup and failover procedures. You will produce the roadmap with effort estimates and sequencing, provide operational support during roll-out, and deliver training and documentation to hand over capabilities to internal teams.
Your responsibilities
- Analyse and map Linux and database estates to produce a clear, actionable inventory and usage profile that highlights major consumers and bottlenecks.
- Define and prioritise a practical optimisation roadmap, including estimated charges, timelines and risk mitigations for patching, capacity and performance work.
- Implement and tune centralized logging and monitoring configurations (real-time dashboards, alerts) to improve incident detection and reduce mean time to resolution.
- Harden operating procedures and implement repeatable automation for patching, backups and failover to improve maintainability and security.
- Support operational teams with troubleshooting, performance tuning and incident resolution during the transition and stabilization phases.
- Produce technical documentation, runbooks and training sessions to transfer knowledge and raise team autonomy.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Medior-level Linux systems administration experience, including Oracle Linux and common tooling for configuration and automation.
- Practical database operations skills with Oracle, MySQL and MariaDB, including backup/restore, patching and performance analysis.
- Hands-on experience with centralized logging solutions and monitoring tools such as Inciga and Grafana, and the ability to create meaningful dashboards and alerts.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, Oracle Cloud, AWS) and how cloud-hosted services affect capacity planning and operations.
- Strong troubleshooting ability, clear technical documentation skills and experience delivering knowledge transfer to operational teams.
