A major public sector organisation is building a small Linux/DBA team to support a wider digital transformation programme run by its Digital Transformation Office (DTO). The role exists to map, stabilise and optimise Linux servers and associated databases across on-premises and cloud platforms, with hands-on work in Linux administration, MySQL/MongoDB/Elasticsearch and scripting for automation and vulnerability management.
The mission
The project focuses on creating a single, accurate view of the organisation's Linux estate and databases, then turning that inventory into an operational optimisation roadmap. The technical landscape mixes Red Hat OpenShift and traditional Linux distributions (RHEL/CentOS, Debian/Ubuntu), multiple database technologies (MySQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch), and cloud-hosted instances in AWS, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Azure. The output will feed capacity planning, cost control and security hardening across production and preproduction systems.
You will join a newly formed team of three engineers inside the DTO's Demand & Portfolio Management group, working closely with the CTO and operations teams. Day to day you will perform environment discovery, resource and performance analysis, scripting and automation (Python, PowerShell), and implement or advise on monitoring (Grafana, Nagios), patching and vulnerability remediation. Deliverables include a prioritized roadmap with estimated effort, implementation support, runbooks and knowledge transfer sessions for internal teams.
Your responsibilities
- Lead the technical inventory and mapping of Linux servers and database instances to produce a detailed, queryable asset view and usage metrics.
- Analyse performance, capacity and cost drivers, and produce a prioritized optimisation roadmap with estimated effort and sequencing.
- Design and implement automation and operational improvements using scripting (Python, PowerShell) to reduce manual work and improve patching, backup and failover processes.
- Implement or enhance monitoring dashboards and alerts in Grafana and Nagios to enable real-time operational visibility and SLA tracking.
- Drive vulnerability management activities for OS and database layers, including coordinated patching and mitigation guidance.
- Produce clear technical documentation, runbooks and deliver training sessions that transfer operational ownership to internal teams.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Strong Linux systems administration experience across RHEL/CentOS, Debian/Ubuntu and familiarity with Red Hat OpenShift.
- Proven database operations knowledge with MySQL, MongoDB and Elasticsearch including backup, restore and performance tuning.
- Practical experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or Azure and hybrid operations.
- Scripting and automation skills in Python or PowerShell to build operational tooling and runbooks.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools, notably Grafana and Nagios, and with vulnerability management processes.
- Senior-level mindset: able to produce roadmaps, estimate effort, communicate with CTO-level stakeholders and coach operational teams.
