The role sits inside the IT team of a large property and casualty retail insurance organisation, supporting policy and claims applications that run on a mainframe stack. The role exists to translate business requests from P&C retail lines into implementable requirements for a mainframe environment, with hands-on knowledge of DB2, IMS and COBOL required to analyse interfaces and validate changes.
The mission
The programme maintains and evolves applications that handle mid-volume retail insurance traffic, integrating front-end portals and backend batch processes. The technical landscape is primarily z/OS mainframe, DB2 databases, IMS transaction managers and COBOL business logic, with multiple backend touch points and offshore delivery teams; the work is focused on accurate business analysis and safe implementation of functional changes.
Day to day you will gather and formalise requirements from business stakeholders and the Product Owner, map those requirements to the existing application architecture, and produce the specifications needed by developers and testers. You will prepare and execute functional test cases, review COBOL code changes delivered by offshore teams, and participate in sprint ceremonies within an Agile delivery team of around 6 to 10 people.
Your responsibilities
- Translate P&C retail business needs into clear, testable functional and non functional requirements that developers can implement
- Validate application impact by mapping requirements to mainframe components, DB2 schemas and IMS transactions
- Review and approve COBOL code changes from offshore teams to ensure alignment with functional specifications
- Design and execute functional and regression tests, and sign off changes before they reach production
- Communicate analysis outcomes to Product Owners, architects and backend developers to keep sprints on schedule
- Maintain accurate documentation of interfaces, data flows and decision logs to support audits and future changes
