The IT centre of expertise for Belgian notaries builds and operates the virtualization and storage infrastructure that runs several national digital services. This System Engineer Virtualization role exists to ensure platform availability and performance through automation, backup and storage management, and operation of hyperconverged infrastructure such as Nutanix (AHV) and VMware vSphere.
The mission
You will join an infrastructure team that supports production platforms used by a large network of notary offices and their end users. The landscape includes Nutanix AHV and VMware vSphere clusters, SAN and archival storage, enterprise backup systems, and Windows Server workloads running in virtual infrastructure. Work focuses on maintaining high availability, meeting backup SLAs (RPO and RTO), and improving operational automation.
Day to day you will provide level 2 and level 3 support for virtualization and backup platforms, take ownership of design and maintenance tasks for hyperconverged infrastructure, and implement backup and retention policies for virtual workloads. You will also script and automate deployment and recovery procedures, participate in disaster recovery planning and tests, and document operational processes used by 1st and 2nd level support.
Your responsibilities
- Ensure high availability and performance of virtualization clusters and storage, keeping services within defined SLAs.
- Design, manage and maintain Nutanix (AHV) and VMware vSphere environments to support production workloads.
- Define and operate enterprise backup and retention policies, enforce RPO/RTO targets and verify restoreability through regular tests.
- Automate provisioning, routine maintenance and recovery tasks to reduce manual operational effort and human error.
- Lead disaster recovery scenarios and participate in DR tests, refining procedures based on test outcomes.
- Produce and maintain clear operational runbooks and handover documentation for support teams.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Minimum 7 years experience as a Virtualization System Engineer, including at least 2 years with senior technical responsibility.
- Proven expertise with virtualization platforms, specifically Nutanix AHV and VMware vSphere.
- Strong experience in backup and data protection solutions, including SLA definition, retention and archiving.
- Solid knowledge of SAN and storage technologies and capacity management.
- Comfortable with Windows Server workloads running in virtualised environments.
- Good understanding of networking fundamentals such as TCP/IP, DNS and DHCP.
- Practical experience with automation and scripting to provision virtual servers and automate backup/restore workflows.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to prioritise requests, communicate clearly during incidents and share knowledge within the team.
