Senior Storage Engineer with 15+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise storage, focused on file, object and block storage and SAN infrastructure. The role exists to strengthen the organisation's storage architecture and delivery, working on design and implementation across NetApp, vSAN and Storage Spaces Direct environments and advising on future storage strategy.
The mission
The team manages the organisation's consolidated storage estate that supports backup, virtualization and large-scale file services. Current work includes architecture reviews, lifecycle refresh of NetApp systems, and evaluating hyperconverged options such as vSAN and Storage Spaces Direct to align capacity, performance and resilience with business needs. Your work will influence storage standards that affect virtual machines, database backups and unstructured file stores across the estate.
On a day-to-day basis you will lead storage architecture decisions and own deliverables for medium to large projects. You will define solution designs, drive migrations and optimisations, and produce capacity and performance plans. You will coordinate with infrastructure, backup and application teams, communicate design trade-offs to stakeholders, and mentor junior storage engineers in best practices.
Your responsibilities
- Lead design and delivery of storage solutions that meet availability, performance and capacity targets, documenting architecture and runbooks
- Define migration and upgrade plans for NetApp arrays, vSAN clusters and Storage Spaces Direct deployments, minimising downtime and operational risk
- Improve SAN infrastructure through configuration, zoning and performance tuning to reduce latency and support SLAs
- Produce capacity forecasts and performance reports that inform procurement and lifecycle decisions
- Coordinate cross-team technical workstreams and present clear options and impact analyses to stakeholders
- Coach and transfer knowledge to the existing team of storage specialists, raising overall operational maturity
Your profile
Essential skills
- 15+ years of practical experience in enterprise storage engineering, including file, object and block storage
- Proven expertise with NetApp platforms and SAN/NAS administration, including zoning and multipathing
- Hands-on experience with vSAN and Storage Spaces Direct, or equivalent hyperconverged storage technologies
- Strong capability in storage architecture, capacity planning and performance tuning
- Clear communicator able to translate technical trade-offs for project stakeholders and lead technical workstreams
