A public-sector software delivery team builds and maintains web applications and microservices for internal and citizen-facing services. This Software Test Engineer will work with Cypress and Java based test automation in an Agile team, contributing both manual and automated testing across APIs and frontends, and will be based in Gent (Ghent), Belgium.
The Mission
The team operates in an Agile delivery model, developing microservices and single-page web applications that integrate with SQL databases and external APIs. Quality gates include CI/CD pipelines where automated Cypress and Newman/Postman suites run alongside Selenium-based regression tests, and cross-browser checks use LambdaTest. Your work helps keep production stability high and reduces manual rework for developers and analysts.
Day to day you will own the verification of sprint stories and technical changes: write and execute functional and technical test cases, implement automated tests for new features and updated microservices, and triage issues reported from monitoring and user feedback. You will collaborate with developers, product analysts and the scrum master to assess risk, reproduce complex defects and ensure fixes are covered by automated checks in the pipeline.
Your Responsibilities
- Design and deliver clear functional and technical test cases that map directly to user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Implement and maintain automated tests using Cypress, Newman/Postman and Selenium, integrating them into the CI/CD pipeline to prevent regressions.
- Investigate, reproduce and prioritise defects, providing actionable bug reports in Jira and working with developers to drive fixes to production.
- Prepare and manage test data for integration and system tests, including SQL queries and database validation steps.
- Run cross-browser and cloud-based compatibility checks using LambdaTest and report stability metrics to the team.
- Coach the team on testability and contribute to continuous improvement of the definition of done and test strategy.
Your Profile
Essential Skills
- Practical experience as a Software Test Engineer or Test Analyst in an Agile environment, medior level.
- Hands-on automation skills with Cypress and experience writing API tests with Postman/Newman.
- Familiarity with Java and Selenium for integration or regression automation work.
- Comfortable querying and validating data in SQL databases as part of test verification.
- Experience using Jira for test reporting, issue tracking and linking defects to stories.
- Ability to analyse risk, communicate reproducible steps and work closely within a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with DB2 or Oracle databases.
- ISTQB certification or equivalent testing training.
- Practical knowledge of SharePoint, Excel/VBA for test data preparation and reporting.
Education
- Bachelor degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent practical experience in software testing.
